Spring has sprung. I'm in summer school, and we are coming up on June, the number one marriage month of the year. Denise went to Florida this past weekend for a wedding. A friend of hers from pre-high school got married.

While in Florida, Denise and Haris  saw a few sights. She sent out a pic of her cradling a gator. She also said that they went to the beach a few times and they got around by bicycles. Haris has been going to the gym a lot during the last few months. Denise has been going to the gym and even running a little. Her and I have the obstacle race coming up in less the 3 weeks. I explained to Denise that I don't really have to be in the best shape possible, I like beer and food too much. I just want to be in good enough shape to be able to ride a bike, or go to the beach or fast dance at a wedding. Perhaps that is the subject of this blog, being in good enough shape. What is good enough for one, may or may not be good enough for another. But DO try to be good enough to enjoy life, whatever that might mean to you.

Life's a beach........

With a break in the weather (though it really was a mild winter), it is time to step up the training. In less than a month I will be doing a little run with a few obstacles thrown in for good measure. That will make the running part easier, though it will make the entire event a little more of a workout.

I was up at Nay Aug Park, running aound the paved road that encircles it. It's about 1 mile give or take a bit. It is not very beneficial to get hung up on a specific distance all of the time. Just go out, run a little, and have fun. Here, in this picture I'm climbing a small outcropping of rocks, perhaps 8 or 10 feet high. I run a little, then I climb this as I go by, then I run some more. Climbing these rocks I use my legs in a different way then when running, I have to stretch them a little, and I also have to use my hands and arms. All in all, it is more a full body workout. Of  course I also throw in a little hill running, and maybe some pushups, dips, or chin ups. The idea is to mix it up and have fun.

Run, climb, play...

It  has been nice the last few days. I haven't written here, but that does not mean I haven't been running or doing anything. I have been busy with finals, and I had a bit of a cold for a week, so I haven't been running like I was for a week or two. I have been getting on the bike for a while though. Yesterday I was back at Nay Aug running in a circle after warming up for a mile. I did some sprints, and some stairs, some dips, and climbed up over a 5 foot wall a few times. It was nice to get out in the sunshine and sweat a little. All in all it was a nice way to spend an hour or so. Hopefully I can keep at it now.

Stay fit, stay active.

Hot again

It was in the mid 60's today, so I went out for a run. I went to Nay Aug Park and ran along the trails. At the beginning of Davis Trail is a small memorial to fallen soldiers. I always feel honored to run past it. They paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. They will never again smell the scent of spring that surrounds us all today. I for one am grateful. Today at the park there were people walking, running and riding bikes and an abundance of dogs. Some kids were in strollers and some walkers were even older than me. There were frisbies and one pair throwing a hardball back and forth.  It was really a vast array of sun worshippers. In inclement weather, I am at times, the only one here. I like that sometimes, but today it was nice to share the park. As busy as it was, there was room for a few more. You should have been there.

chilly today,,,,

It is chilly today but the time for serious training is upon me. I need to lose a few pounds, gain some flexibility and strength, and all around get into better shape. I look way too much like a side of beef hanging from these rings. I went for a short run, did a little obstacle work at the playground, then did a little circuit work before finishing up with a slow final mile to cool down. Last week it was in the 70's. This week it is damp and in the 50's. Yet the training must go on. Looking back on the last few years or so, I wish I had maintained, now I have to re-aquire before I can begin to maintain. My joints are older and less willing to do as I ask, but they will loosen in time. The human body is continuously rebuilding itself. With a little direction from the brain and a little tenacity, it will rebuild better.

Out for fun

The weather was great again today. Low 60's, not too windy, the sun on my face.... nice. I went to Nay Aug Park. I figured there would be a crowd there, and there was, but I was happy to find one little playground empty. Once a week or so, if no one is around, I run through the park a little. I am planning on doing a "Warrior Dash" with Denise et al. in June. Its a 4 miler with 10 or so obstacles scattered throughout. There will be walls to climb over,,,, water to wade through, logs to crawl over and under, that sort of thing. I know I can run the 4 miles, I do that a few times a week, and I know I can get through the course. What I am a little concerned about the ease that I can get through the course. I know it won't kill me, and I know I won't quit until its over, but it will call on me to use muscles that I do not normally use. So, when no one is around the playground, I climb over walls or fences, crawl through tubes and up slides, use the hanging rings, and do my best to use those muscles that are too often ignored.

Lets Play

Its a great day to get outside and get some Vitamin D. Vitamin D is good for many things. Studies have shown that it is needed for matabolism regulation, cancer reduction and possibly even as a Multiple Sclerosis inhibitor, plus many other things. You can take a multi vitamin to help ensure that you get your fair share (I do), but one good source of vitamin D is the sun. Just drag your heiner out and play. Run, walk, take the kids or dog for a walk. Just drag your heiner out and catch a few rays. You'll feel better and you will be better. I don't know of anyone who could not stand to be a little better.
